TL;DR
- A brand identity is more than a logo. A proper package includes a logo suite, colour palette, typography, brand guidelines and a set of everyday brand assets.
- Prices range enormously: a logo contest starts at $249, 99designs' brand launch package starts at $599, and most branding agency projects on Clutch land between $10,000 and $49,999.
- Freelancers sit in between. On Upwork, most top logo designers charge $35–$50 an hour.
- Agencies usually include strategy (research, positioning, sometimes naming). Most freelancers and design subscriptions focus on the visual identity.
- Whoever you hire, get the source files, full copyright and font licence details in writing.
Ask five providers what brand identity design costs and you'll get five very different answers. A logo contest on 99designs starts at $249. Clutch, which collects verified client reviews of agencies, reports that the average branding agency project costs $71,651.70. Both are "brand identity design services". They just aren't the same thing.
This guide untangles that. We'll cover what a brand identity package should include, what each type of provider charges and delivers, how long it takes, and the costs people forget. Every price comes from the provider's own page or a source we link to, checked on 21 October 2026.
A quick note on us: Design Shifu is a design subscription. We design logos, style guides and colour and type systems, but we don't offer custom brand strategy. So we'll be straight about where we fit and where you'd be better off with someone else.
What are brand identity design services?
Brand identity design is the work of creating how your brand looks: your logo, colours, fonts, imagery style, and the rules for using them. It's the visual layer of your brand.
It often gets mixed up with two neighbouring jobs:
- Brand strategy is the thinking that comes before the design: who you're for, how you're different, and what you stand for. Agencies often bundle it in.
- Branding is the broader whole: strategy, identity, voice and how it all shows up in the world.
So when you compare brand identity design services, check whether you're being quoted for design only, or for strategy plus design. It's the single biggest reason prices differ. If you're still fuzzy on where a logo ends and an identity begins, our explainer on logo vs brand identity covers it.
What's included in a brand identity package?
Most of the pages ranking for this search list deliverables without saying which ones you get at which price. Here's what a complete package usually covers, so you can check any quote against it.
The core deliverables
- Logo suite. Not one logo, but a set: a primary logo, a secondary or horizontal version, an icon or mark for small spaces, and one-colour and reversed versions.
- Colour palette. Primary, secondary and neutral colours, with codes for screen and print: HEX and RGB for digital, CMYK and ideally Pantone for print.
- Typography. A heading font and a body font, with sizes and weights, plus a note on the licence you need to use them.
- Brand guidelines. The rulebook that explains how to use everything above: clear space, minimum sizes, colour combinations, and what not to do.
The extras that make it usable
- Everyday brand assets. Business cards, letterhead, email signature, social media templates and a presentation template.
- Imagery and icon style. How photos should look, and a small set of icons or patterns.
- Brand voice. Some agencies include tone-of-voice guidance; most designers don't.
The files you should get
Ask for vector files (AI, EPS, SVG and PDF) for anything that needs to scale, plus PNG and JPG for everyday digital use. You should also get the source files, so another designer can work with your identity later. If a quote doesn't mention file formats, ask before you pay.
If you're a new business working out what you need first, our brand identity starter pack breaks down the essentials.
How much do brand identity design services cost?
Here's what each type of provider charges, based on published prices.
Logo contests and marketplaces
On 99designs, logo contests cost $249 (Bronze), $399 (Silver), $799 (Gold) or $1,050 (Platinum). You get dozens of concepts from different designers and full copyright to the winner. Its Brand Launch Package, which adds a brand guide and "digital and print essentials", starts at $599.
It's a fast, affordable way to get a logo. The trade-off is depth. Contest designers are working from a short brief, often in competition with each other, so you won't get much strategic thinking.
Freelance designers
Upwork says logo designers on its platform charge a median of $15–$30 an hour, while top logo designers range from $25 to $75 an hour, with most at $35–$50.
How that turns into a project price depends on scope. As an illustration (our assumption, not a quote), a logo suite, palette, typography and a short guidelines document might take a skilled freelancer around 40 hours. At $35–$50 an hour, that's roughly $1,400–$2,000. A strong freelancer is often the best value for a small business. The risk is availability later, when you need new assets in a hurry.
Design subscriptions
Subscriptions charge a flat monthly fee for ongoing design. They're increasingly used for brand identity work, because the identity is only the start. You then need it applied to ads, social posts, decks and print.
- ManyPixels lists logos and brand guides on all its plans, from $699 to $2,599 a month, per its pricing page.
- Duck Design includes "Logo & Brand Guide" in its Creative Suite plan, at 1,899 a month, per its brand identity page.
- Design Shifu starts at $549 a month. We design logos, style guides, colour systems and font rules, with two designers and an account manager on every plan.
The honest limit: most subscriptions design your identity, but don't run deep strategy, research or naming projects. We don't offer custom branding strategy either.
Branding agencies
According to Clutch, most branding projects reviewed on its platform cost $10,000–$49,999. The average is $71,651.70, pulled up by very large projects, and agencies typically charge $100–$149 an hour.
For that, you usually get strategy as well as design: research, positioning, sometimes naming and messaging, then the full identity and guidelines. Expect it to take a while. One agency, Flexy, says a full branding project typically takes six to 12 weeks.
What pushes the price up
The biggest factor is strategy. Research, positioning and naming can cost more than the design itself. After that, it's the number of concepts and revision rounds, how many brand assets you need (stationery, templates, signage, packaging), animation, and how fast you need it. A rushed agency project almost always costs more.
How much should you spend on brand identity design?
It depends on where your business is. Here's a rough guide.
Just starting out, on a tight budget? A logo contest or a good freelancer will get you a solid logo and basic guidelines for a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars. Spend more later, once you know your market better.
Growing, with steady marketing? This is where a design subscription often makes sense. You get the identity designed, then have the same team apply it to everything you publish each month.
Repositioning, raising money or entering new markets? If the strategy matters as much as the look, a branding agency is worth the investment. That's the work its $10,000+ fee pays for.
Is it worth spending at all? Consistency is where the payoff shows up. In a 2019 Lucidpress survey of more than 200 organisations, respondents estimated that consistent branding could increase revenue by 33%. It's a self-reported estimate rather than hard data, but it points the right way. An identity only helps if you use it consistently.
The costs and fine print people forget
A few things rarely appear in brand identity quotes, but they matter.
Copyright and source files. Make sure the contract transfers full copyright to you and that you get the editable source files. Without them, you'll depend on the original designer forever. (99designs, for example, includes full copyright ownership on its contest packages. Design Shifu clients own 100% of the designs.)
Font licences. Some fonts are free for commercial use; others need a paid licence, sometimes per user or per website. Ask your designer which fonts they've used and what licence you need.
Trademark. A designer can't tell you whether your logo or name is safe to trademark. That's a job for a trademark search and, ideally, a lawyer. Budget for it separately if it matters to you.
Revision limits. "Revisions included" can mean one round or unlimited. Get the number in writing before you start.
How to brief a brand identity designer
A good brief saves you time and money, whoever you hire. Send:
- Who you are and who you serve. Your product, your customers and what makes you different.
- Three to five words for how you want to come across, like "calm, expert, modern".
- Brands you like and dislike, inside and outside your industry, with a line on why.
- Where the brand will appear. Website, packaging, social, signage, print.
- What you already have, even if you're replacing it.
- Must-haves and no-gos. Colours you love, symbols to avoid, competitors you don't want to look like.
If a provider doesn't ask for most of this, that's a warning sign.
What happens after your brand identity is finished?
This is the part most guides skip. A new identity only works if it shows up consistently in your ads, social posts, presentations, emails and print, and that's where many brands drift off-model within months.
Plan for the rollout as part of the budget. Turn your guidelines into ready-to-use templates, and keep your designers close enough to apply the identity to new work every week. Our guide to brand guidelines for startup founders covers how to keep things consistent as you grow.
This is also where a design subscription earns its place. Even if an agency builds your identity, a subscription is a cost-effective way to produce everything that comes after it.
Conclusion
Brand identity design services cover a huge range, from a $249 logo contest to an agency project that costs tens of thousands. The right choice depends on whether you need strategy as well as design, and how much ongoing work will follow.
If you need research, positioning or naming, go to a branding agency. If you need a strong visual identity, plus a team to apply it to everything you publish, a design subscription is often the better value. See how Design Shifu handles branding. Plans start at $549 a month, with a 14-day money-back guarantee.
FAQ
How much do brand identity design services cost?
It depends on who you hire. Logo contests on 99designs cost $249–$1,050, and its Brand Launch Package starts at $599. Freelancers on Upwork typically charge $15–$75 an hour. Most branding agency projects on Clutch cost $10,000–$49,999.
What is included in a brand identity package?
A full package usually includes a logo suite, a colour palette with digital and print codes, typography, and brand guidelines. Many also include everyday assets like business cards, social templates and a presentation template.
How long does brand identity design take?
A logo contest takes about a week. A freelancer usually needs two to six weeks for a full identity. Agencies often take six to 12 weeks, especially when strategy is included.
What's the difference between brand identity and branding?
Brand identity is the visual side: logo, colours, fonts and how they're used. Branding is broader and includes strategy, positioning, voice and how the brand is experienced.
Can I get brand identity design through a subscription?
Yes. Design subscriptions like Design Shifu and ManyPixels design logos and brand guidelines as part of their plans. Most don't offer in-depth brand strategy, so they suit businesses that need design rather than positioning.
Who owns the brand identity once it's designed?
You should, but only if your contract says so. Ask for full copyright transfer and the editable source files before you start. Fonts may need separate licences, and trademark registration is a separate legal step.
